Call it a summit meeting between two American icons, Willie Nelson & Wynton Marsalis, two of the most significant figures in modern-day country and jazz, who discovered common ground in their love for jazz standards and the blues. Their performance stirred the sounds of New Orleans, Nashville, Austin and New York City into a brilliantly programmed mix that was equal parts down-home and cosmopolitan, with plenty of swing and just a touch of melancholy. To say that these shows were a hot ticket would be an understatement. Luckily, the tapes were rolling and the results of this unique collaboration now constitute the Blue Note album Two Men With The Blues for everyone who couldn't cram into The Allen Room. Featuring great playing from one of the hottest bands around these classic tracks are given new life by the extraordinary dual talents of Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis. At a time when most people are thinking of retirement, Willie has never been busier. His profile has been high in recent weeks with his various career retrospective releases and sold out tour and this album can rightly stake it's place alongside anything else he has done. Wynton rarely sounds so relaxed and both of these musical giants are clearly having the time of their lives together on these new interpretations of some of the greatest songs of the 20th century. | | | Product Details: | | | Audio CD Release Date:

A Whole Lot of FunJul 06, 2010 If you close your eyes and listen to this CD, you can imagine how it must have been created. You can picture Willie Nelson's tour bus stuck on the side of the road. You can picture Wynton Marsalis' bus pulling over to help out. You can picture the musicians meeting, introducing their bands. And then Willie says "Hey, man, while we wait on the tow truck, let's jam for a while."
And that's the album. It isn't a groundbreaking, historic summit of two great artistic minds. It is two phenomenal musicians getting together and having a good time. The tunes are standards - the kind you don't need to read music for. These old country, jazz, and blues charts aren't brilliantly reinvisioned. They are just played with tremendous skill and infectious good-humor. Wynton even sings a few verses himself.
This album is fun. That's all. It is good to hear Willie and Wynton, their bands mixed together and exactly on the same page, just having a fine time. I know I had one as well.

I expected moreOct 26, 2009 This album had me guessing what would be heard before I bought it..I am well versed in New Orleans music styles having played a lot of it in various jazz bands for years..I play the trombone..
The phrasing was ok..the instrumental licks were ok..Willie can read with the best of them...Put it all together and I expected more from Wynton..I recognise him to be a genius. I have seen him play, have listened to his many music shows on XM radio, have watched many specials that he has dome on tv..but I missed the point of the exercise here. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but maybe I expected Wynton to hit a little harder. His band preformed as expected..great Dixieland point counterpoint..good solos..good phrasing. If only Wynton had gone a little deeper into his bottomless bag of musical knowledge and opened up more. Willie dosen't need any introduction..He carried the ball with flair and style..I hope he plays for another 100 years.
