Simply FantasticMay 14, 2010 I really love this album. I love the genre of this music and Emiliana created a perfect art work with this album. All the songs from "To Be Free" to "Sea People" are perfect. This album helped me get through a point of severe heartache over someone I really liked and desired. It gradually healed my pain the more I listened to it and the more I sung it to myself. It puts you in a state of good feeling and calmness that assures things will eventually be alright. I really love Emiliana for this work and I wish one day I can meet her and thank her for this good music. If you like this type of genre, this album is one that I highly recommend to get because you will love it. If you don't love it in first spin or play, I guarantee that you will eventually love it, and when you do, you will really love it and appreciate it more.
A beautiful new voiceSep 27, 2009 I first became aware of Emiliana Torrini when, after 3 hours of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' the beautiful and haunting 'Gollums Song' started off the closing credits. I was exhausted from the film and all the intense battle scenes and was ready to stop the dvd and go to bed, but I found myself riveted to what I was hearing.
This young woman has a very beautiful voice and displays a wide singing range in 'Gollum's Song'. So I ran to the computer and looked her up on Amazon and ordered her first album (I think it's her first) 'Love in the Time of Science'.
I've listened to it several times since it arrived and am happy to report that the album is much along the lines of 'Gollum's Song' type ballads, with a couple more rock-style songs here and there, but these harder moments don't last long and she reverts to her strength which is soft-edged and dreamy.
I liked the acoustic guitar and quiet string backups. The songs are all, perhaps, too similar and hover around the same tonal centers that are in her best vocal range.
I hope she does not try to imitate her compatriot Björk because they have little in common in regards to vocal sound and general approach. Torrini's voice is best suited to romantic ballads, jazz and even the blues.
I am going to get some of her other releases and find out more about which direction she's going with her clearly budding great career.
My only complaint about 'Love in the Time of Science' is the very short length of the cd, just under 40 minutes. TOO SHORT! But most pop albums have always been skimpy on their content. It's just that I wanted to put her own for a full 80 minutes and bask in her wonderful singing.
4 stars, then, because of the short timings of the songs and album, otherwise it would have been a solid 5 stars.
Find out what you've been missingJul 07, 2009 I just happened upon Emiliana Torrini's music while searching for another artist. I usually look into suggested music just for the happy accident of finding singers and musicians I might not have found or considered otherwise--glad she came up as a suggested artist. Her music is eerie and ethereal.
Check it out for yourself (one woman's Enya is another's Emiliana). Music is about discovery, so take your own journey--I highly recommend her as an exceptional artist with a magnificent voice.

I like your new stuff better than your old stuffJun 27, 2009 do you like the latest from emiliana torrini? then don't buy this! rather dated 90's sounding overproduced dance tracks with rather average lyrics. there are a couple of tracks that have withstood the test of time and fashion, but most of this was unbearable to listen to, having recently been enchanted by the last album, and loving fisherman so much. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Compelling limitationsMar 28, 2009 3 1/2
Torrini's debut fits snugly with other female-fronted trip-hop acts from around the millennium. There are attempts to sound more organic and singer-songwriterish, but ultimately it is a (willingly accepted) facade even good production and her obvious vocal strength cannot completely transcend.
