Still NOT the Best of Donna Summer -- Donna Die-Hards Are Still WAITING !Aug 15, 2010 Unless you want to pilfer $30 for the 2 disc "Donna Summer Anthology" released by Casablanca (which to my ears sounds like the remastering job was not up to par -- the sound is inferior), I'm still waiting for the BEST of Donna Summer on 1 disc. "Endless Summer" comes close, but doesn't cut it. The problem lies in adding the post "On The Radio" stuff from 1980 and onwards. True "Donna Die-Hard's" really want ONE disc of her classic 1970's stuff -- from "Love To Love You Baby" to "On The Radio" and all the Creme de la Creme in between, roughly spanning the years 1975-80.
I agree with one of the reviewers here who said ANY Donna Summer disco collection needs to have "Heaven Knows", one of the very few duets Donna did during her heyday (the other being the overrated "No More Tears" with Babs). Her duet with future husband Bruce Sodano of the "Brooklyn Dreams" is a beaut on "Heaven Knows".
Surprisingly, the compilers at Casablanca, Geffen, and Universal Music have yet to get it right when it comes to making a "Must Have" Donna Summer collection of her greatest disco stuff on one disc. Sure there's "Walk Away", but that thing only has 9 tracks and covers the stuff only up to early 1979, which doesn't due Ms. Summer any justice. "On The Radio" again comes close, but it's got some filler tracks in there and many are alternate versions, not the radio-hit versions we are so familiar with.
Donna "Haters" have riled against her disco stuff and later selling out in the 1980's, but listen to her '70s disco stuff now and it still stands up to anything done in the last 40 years in Pop music. Her voice bears the years of hard gospel training while growing up in Boston. If you compare the production values on her '70s stuff against the '80s stuff produced by the likes of Quincy Jones, the '80s stuff actually sounds overproduced with more bells and whistles and gimmicky stuff in the background. The disco stuff actually sounds cleaner and more purposeful in its use of instruments. The '80s stuff is just a bombast of sound effects. Donna's voice sounds buried in a landslide of gimmicky sounds, especially on her Geffen material, which sounds very dated today.
What will it take to roll out a Donna Summer's Greatest Hits on 1 disc that contains ALL the classics without omitting any great songs (again, please note to leave "Heaven Knows" IN these collections). I'm still keeping my fingers crossed -- and please, no more Quincy Jones produced garbage or any of her Geffen stuff from the '80s. It would be nice to release a 2-disc set with the second disc being a "Bonus" collection of Donna's harder than hard to find 1981 classic "I'm A Rainbow". Now THAT would be one helluva Classic collection -- her Seventies stuff PLUS select songs from "I'm A Rainbow".
Are the Donna compilers listening????

HOT SUMMERApr 06, 2008 This cd is a great way to break into summer.I remember most of these songs as a young girl around 10 at the time when my older sisters and their friends were bumping these tracks.Reminds me of a time when music was at its best in quality and respect. This will always be one of my favorites.
