Seminal classic of the 60sJun 25, 2010 How delighted I am to have remembered and bought this album. All those memories of that special time come flooding back. The reviewers in the generally brilliant 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guide had nothing but contempt for Donovan and for this album. But how wrong they were. Thirty years on this music is still so strangely beautiful and satisfying. And, in hindsight, one can see how many bands have been influenced by this album. A striking example is 'Season of the Witch', which surely must have influenced The Doors.Take a close listen and see if you agree. And if you look at the liner notes, which are a great addition in this package, one can see why this album was pivotal in so many ways: Donovan had none other than three of the Led Zepps playing for him. Wow! Now that takes class to select them, independently and before they hooked up to form Led Zeppelin! It is nice to have the bonus tracks, but my 5 stars relate to the album as it was originally released - I find 'To Susan on the west coast waiting' a bit repetitive and boring. The remastering of the album is, however, superb, and one cannot believe an album of this quality was recorded so long ago. It is a 'must have' for any collector.
trippin in the 60'sMar 28, 2010 Killer album, i havent heard since i was a kid. Brings back many excellent memories. Wheres my 25?
Donovan FanJan 22, 2010 I've been a Donovan fan since I was young but didn't have any of his music on CD.Christmas came up and I needed an extra gift for my wife so I bought the greatest hit's CD.Since then we have listened to and sang along with this collection and have had a ball with it.My wife and I are musicians and have added Mellow Yellow to our set. Thanks Donovan for giving us such great music to enjoy.
I'm Just Mad About DonovanJan 13, 2010 Originally released in the late 1960's this has all his hits from the 1960s. Great liner notes from Donovan. Paul McCartney however does not get credit for the "Mellow Yellow" backing voices (near the end) here. Also its just an urban legend that three members of Led Zeppelin were on Hurdy Gurdy Man. As Clem Cattini on [...] stated John Bonham did not play drums (this was two years before he and John Paul Jones met)
Jimmy Page later said he did not play either. Alan Parker and Donovan were the two guitarists. John Paul Jones did the arrangements and such.
Still GreatNov 10, 2009 Recently I was looking at some of my old Lps and ran across an ancient Donovan record and decided to buy his greatest hits. I have most of his 45s but to have these tunes on CD is awesome. How can you go wrong with songs like " Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Sunshine Superman", and the brillant "Atlantis".
I love this artist, the man who taught the Beatles how to finger pick the guitar.
