This disc selects highlights from the three albums they made together at Verve (including their Porgy and Bess), and adds a spiffy live track from the Hollywood Bowl. Though they don't harmonize much (Armstrong's voice wasn't built for harmony), Ella's dignified swing and flashes of teasing wit play off Satchmo's gritty, good-humored roar symbiotically. The material is mostly lightweight Tin Pan Alley stuff (lots of Gershwin, plus the likes of "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm"), and they fly it like a kite. --Douglas Wolk | | | Product Details: | | | Audio CD Release Date:

Ella and LouisJul 07, 2010 I knew what to expect. I've heard all these tunes on the radio. It certainly helps to have such good piano with them.
Best of Ella Fitzgerald and Louie ArmstrongMay 21, 2010 This CD was wonderful! I previously purchased the first in this series of two, and wish more could be available. Ella Fitzgerald, in my opinion, is the greatest female singer of all times! Additionally, I had the pleasure of meeting Louie Armstrong in person after a concert in the late 1950's. He was very gracious and shook my hand. I told him I really enjoyed his concert, and he replied, "Thank ya, little lady, Thank ya!"...I've never forgotten that. The album combines old favorites, along with others that I wasn't familiar with. All in all it's a grand experience to hear these two great masters together! Thank you!!!
love affairMar 07, 2010 Ever since my dad introduced me to the music of Ella and Louis, separately and together, over sixty years ago, they have remained musical royalty in my mind. They have so much fun together on this album that you will find yourself laughing out loud. The only thing missing from this album is SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY. But wait until you hear them doing songs from George and Ira Gershwin's PORGY & BESS. Pure bliss.
love itDec 30, 2009 They crete an unlikely but wonderful harmony together.
One of my fave CDs ever!
Best Of Ella and Louie - Clearly SuperiorJul 18, 2009 The past will last. Clearly superior - Others can learn a lot from this CD - especially modern musicians. Just so everyone will know - There are many more like this one. The past will last. We don't know that we have the future but we know that we have the past. We have Ella and Louie. I suggest that all modern jazz musicians buy and pay very close attention to this and other similar recordings.
